Today, we will take an in-depth look at everything related to the size and quantity of large pizzas. From slice amount and size to calculating portion quantities based on who is at the event. This is the best and only guide you need for your pizza party needs!

How Many Inches Is A Large Pizza?

A random question, I know, but one that actually has many benefits!

If you are planning a pizza party, knowing how big specific types of pizza are will also help you determine how many you need to get for the occasion.

This will ultimately help you buy the correct amount of pizza and not underfeed or overfeed your guests. While leftover pizza is great (and you can find my guide on How To Reheat Pizza here), after a couple of days, it gets a little repetitive.

Another benefit of knowing how big a large pizza is is to calculate costs. This applies both to buying cost and the cost of making the pizza yourself.

And, to work out the cost of making the pizza yourself, you obviously also need to know how much dough, sauce, cheese, and topping you need – another thing knowing the size of a pizza can help you out with.

So, how many inches is a large pizza?

It depends on where you are from and where you are buying from.

A standard large pizza is around 14 inches (35.56 cm). However, in some countries, a 12-inch (30.48 cm) or 16-inch (40.64) pizza is called a large pizza.

So, to avoid any confusion, I always work from the size of most American large pizzas, which are 14 inches in diameter.

How Many Slices Do You Get From A Large Pizza?

Slices On A Large Pizza

Typically a 14-inch large pizza will give you eight slices. Each slice will be 19.25 square inches.

Now, obviously, if you cut more slices from this large pizza, the slices (therefore portions) will be smaller. If you cut a 14-inch pizza into ten slices, each slice will be 15.4 square inches.

And, if you cut the same normal large pizza size into 12 slices, each slice will be 12.8 square inches.

It is highly unlikely that a large pizza will be cut into six slices. It’s simply too big and difficult to eat. But 8, 10, or 12 slices are all acceptable.

How Many People Does A Standard Large Pizza Size Feed?

Large Pizza how many people can eat.

This is very difficult to answer because there are many factors that can affect the final number.

Men often eat more than women, so if it’s an all-men party, you will definitely need more slices. On average, men will eat between 2-4 slices each, and women (on average) will eat between 1-3 slices.

Then, you also have to consider age. A toddler may not even be able to finish one slice of pizza. But a young male adult will definitely eat at least two. An elderly person will also eat less.

And finally, you also have to consider the size of the slices and the type of pizza. If the slices are smaller, people can also eat more slices. If the pizza is LOADED with toppings, people won’t eat as many slices as compared to a margarita pizza.

So, bottom line? How many inches is a large pizza in diameter?

I would say that one 14-inch large pizza will feed between two and four people, depending on the factors laid out above.

What Do You Need To Make A Large Pizza?

Ingredients for a large pizza

These numbers will help you calculate the cost of making one large 14-inch pizza. In turn, this will help you buy exactly how much you need and how much to use.

So, let’s start with the dough.

The average large pizza size is 14 inches. You would need 15 ounces of dough (425 grams) for a traditional base. These are only about 3-5mm thick.

Then, you will also need about 6-8 ounces (170-226 grams) of tomato pizza sauce.

You will also need roughly 2 to 3 cups of grated cheese, again, depending on your preference.

And ultimately, the amount of toppings you use depends entirely on how you like your pizza to be.

You can take a look at this guide on the best pizza toppings to use. They are all very versatile, easy to combine with other flavors, and relatively easy to find as well.

How Many Inches Is A Large Pizza Versus Other Sizes?

Now that you know how big a large pizza is, let’s take a look at some other common pizza sizes.

Large Pizza Versus Other Sizes

How Big Is An Extra-Large Pizza?

An extra-large pizza usually starts at 16 inches in diameter. But, if a specific establishment sells 16-inch pizzas as “large” options, obviously their extra-large will be 18 inches (45.72 cm).

That being said, in some countries, a 14-inch pizza is considered to be a large pizza.

An extra-large pizza is usually cut into 10, 12, or even 14 slices depending on the exact size.

Size Of A Medium Pizza

A medium pizza is usually between 10-12 inches, again, depending on where you are from or buying from. You will see that I explained this in the How Big Is A 12-Inch Pizza article.

Medium pizzas are usually cut into either 6 or 8 slices, depending on the size.

Small Pizza Size

Finally, small pizzas range between 4 and 10 inches.

If it’s between 4 to 8 inches in diameter, it is often referred to as a “personal pizza” because it’s only suited for one person.

In that case, a small would refer to anything between 8-10 inches.

These pizzas can be cut into 4 or 6 slices. Unless it’s a 10-inch pizza, they aren’t usually cut into 8 slices.
