Spongebob’s Kelp Shake
Try Spongebob Squarepants’s famous Kelp Shake with my healthy fruity smoothie recipe full of sweet pineapple and apple, plus spinach, avocado, and a pinch of kelp powder to turn it into a green machine!
I love experimenting with recipes from TV and movies, and none more so than cartoons! I’ve tried and tested Homer Simpson’s donuts, the spinach puffs served in The Emperor’s New Groove, the iced buns from Brave, and Princess Tiana’s beignets and her spoonbread. There is something about cartoon food that looks so inviting that I just want to grab a fork and dig in with all the characters!
What is Spongebob’s Kelp Shake?
So, for my next project, I decided to recreate Spongebob’s Kelp Shake. Now, in the cartoon, this shake is 99% kelp juice, but that rogue 1% is something so toxic that it makes the characters grow green hair all over their bodies. I don’t think that will happen with this recipe, but I can’t make any promises! However, it is definitely one way to get the kids to eat their vegetables! If you would like to make my delicious Kelp Shake from Spongebob Squarepants, keep reading to find the recipe!
Ingredients
Don’t worry, there’s nothing toxic in my recipe, unlike the cartoon! Instead, I use fresh and healthy ingredients, full of vitamins and minerals – four of our daily fruits and vegetables – for a vibrantly green invigorating smoothie to start your day, or boost your energy in the afternoon!
A green smoothie is not always going to be the most popular with kids. Green means healthy, and apparently healthy means tasteless or, worse, disgusting.
So, my solution is to tell them it’s Spongebob’s Kelp Shake and maybe they will grow bright green hair all over their bodies! Children can be so morbidly excited by the gruesome things in life, so in no time at all their glasses of Kelp Shake are empty. Plus, they then realize how delicious a green smoothie can be!
Apple: So sweet and refreshing, apple is a great staple ingredient for light smoothies, plus its flavor can soothe the more bitter ingredients.
Avocado: Have you ever tried a smoothie with avocado? It adds a beautiful creaminess full of vitamins, plus it keeps your smoothie dairy-free.
Spinach: The power of green! Spinach is one of the healthiest vegetables and is classified as a superfood, so start making spinach smoothies! It aids weight loss, prevents cancer, and keeps your heart healthy, so don’t just eat it in salads, pile it into your blender for your Kelp Shake!
Pineapple: To draw out the fruity sweetness, I add fresh pineapple. This burst of tropical flavor balances the bitterness of the spinach, plus did you know it is full of antioxidants to help fight disease? Healthy and delicious all in one!
Soy Milk: To keep my Kelp Shake dairy-free, I use soy milk. Feel free to try other dairy-free alternatives, however, soy milk is one of my favorites because it is full of omega-3 fatty acids.
Kelp Powder: Finally, the reason it is called a Kelp Shake – kelp powder! Add a spoonful to your smoothie for a boost in nutrients.
How to make the famous Kelp Shake?
First, cut the pineapple and apple into chunks and place them in your blender with spinach, avocado, soy milk, and a pinch of kelp powder.
Blend on high speed until smooth and creamy. Pour into glasses or your self-made Spongebob Squarepants’s Kelp Shake bottles and enjoy!
How to cut the pineapple the right way?
First, cut off the top of the pineapple.
Next, cut off the sides of the pineapple to create a flat surface. This will make it easier to slice the fruit into evenly-sized chunks or rings.
Once you have removed the skin and hardcore from the pineapple, you can cut it up into smaller pieces according to your preferred size and shape. Some people prefer larger chunks for a more rustic smoothie, while others might prefer smaller pieces for a smoother consistency.
Finally, use your knife to remove any remaining bits of fruit left on the rind. This should leave you with nicely prepared pineapple chunks that are ready to add to your smoothie! off the skin around the sides of the pineapple to remove any excess flesh.
What are the benefits of Kelp Powder?
Kelp is seaweed, which is why it’s available under the sea in Spongebob Squarepants and is incredibly rich in nutrients.
Kelp has many health benefits including reducing the risk of cancers, being a source of iodine for healthy thyroid function, boosting brainpower, and even reducing your cholesterol levels.
You can eat kelp in many different ways such as raw, cooked, or powdered, and my Kelp Shake only requires a teaspoon of kelp powder which you can buy at any health food store.
Kelp is a popular ingredient in a lot of Asian cuisines, so you may find raw or cooked seaweed in Japanese or Korean stores.
So, next time your kids turn their noses up at their vegetables, offer them my take on Spongebob’s Kelp Shake . In no time at all, they will have gulped down their daily fruit and vegetables, plus nutrient-dense kelp powder, and will be excitedly waiting to break out in bright green hair!
Fruity, healthy, and bright green, my take on Spongebob’s Kelp Shake is so easy to make and to drink, and is a huge boost to your daily fruit and veg intake!
