Dalgona Coffee TikTok
Today we are tackling the crazy trend known as Dalgona coffee or Whipped Coffee. Popularized by a viral social media video, this fancy coffee is super easy to make.
What Is Whipped Coffee?
Whipped or Dalgona coffee is a type of South Korean coffee. Additionally, whipped coffee can also be found in Greece under the name of frappe coffee and in India, where whipped coffee is called beaten coffee.
Whipped coffee is a combination of equal parts instant coffee, granulated sugar, and water. This combination is whisked until it transforms from a liquidy concoction to a thick and creamy glob of deliciousness. The mixture is then spooned over hot or cold milk and served.
Can I Use Regular Ground Coffee To Make Dalgona Coffee?
Sadly, you cannot use regular ground coffee to make Dalgona coffee. Making Dalgona coffee with ground coffee will result in a disaster. Ground coffee must be brewed in order to make it palatable.
Whipped coffee must be made with instant coffee. Make sure you are not using dark roast instant coffee, as you can end up with an overly bitter flavor. Alternatively, you can also use instant espresso powder to make Dalgona coffee.
What Type Of Sugar Is Best For Whipped Coffee?
Granulated sugar is the best sugar for whipped coffee. However, you can use other granular sugars such as cane sugar, brown sugar, or coconut sugar. I used brown sugar.
Keto Dalgona Coffee
If you are on the keto diet, there’s no need to fret. You can make Dalgona coffee without sugar. You can substitute the sugar with Stevia, allulose, Erythritol, or Swerve. However, make sure you use a granular sugar-free sweetener.
It’s also important to note that the whipped coffee mixture will not be as light or fluffy as it would be if it were made with sugar.
Even if you are not on the keto diet, you can also reduce the sugar in this recipe to fit your tastes.
Tips For Making Whipped Coffee
Do not whip the coffee mixture in a mug or a jar. Tall containers such as mugs or tall glasses prevent air from being incorporated into the coffee. Place the instant coffee, water, and sugar in a bowl. It will be much easier to whip the coffee mixture as it gives you more room to move.
The bowl will also allow you to incorporate more air into the coffee mixture, which is essential if you want to create a frothy and fluffy texture.
Another tip is to use hot water. Even though your coffee mixture will whip up perfectly fine with cold or room temperature water, hot water speeds up the whipping process.
Moreover, make sure you are using precise measurements. Accurate measurements are the only way to create a good foam.
If your coffee mixture seems like it will never from up, keep whipping it. The foam happens when you least expect it. One minute your coffee mixture will be a liquid, and the next, it will be a thick and fluffy foam.
Use an electric mixer to whip the foam quickly. While you can use a whisk and whip the coffee mixture by hand, it can take 8-15 minutes to whip the coffee. Furthermore, you have to whip the mixture in a zig-zag motion, which can be extremely tiring.
How To Store Whipped Coffee
Although whipped coffee seems like it cannot be stored, it can be stored. However, I must admit whipped coffee is consumed when it is fresh.
Place any unused whipped coffee in an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. The coffee mixture will deflate the longer it sits, but you can always whip it again. This will yield a frothier foam that is lighter in color.
Alternatively, you can also freeze the whipped coffee mixture for up to a month. Simply store the whipped coffee mixture in an airtight container. The whipped coffee mixture will not solidify and will remain in a scoopable state.
You can also scoop the coffee mixture onto a parchment-lined cookie sheet and freeze it. In the morning, you can place the Dalgona mixture right on top of your glass of milk and get your coffee fix on the go.
Whipped Coffee Variations
Once you’ve mastered this whipped coffee recipe, feel free to experiment with different flavors and ingredients.
• Pure vanilla extract: Add 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract to the whipped coffee mixture for a delicious flavor.
• Caramel: Add 1-2 tablespoons of caramel to the whipped coffee mixture for a sweet and decadent treat.
• Chocolate: Add 1-2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder to the whipped coffee mixture for chocolatey goodness.
• Hazelnut: Add 1-2 tablespoons of hazelnut spread to the whipped coffee mixture for a Nutella-like flavor.
• Peppermint: Add 1-2 teaspoons of peppermint extract to the whipped coffee mixture for a refreshing taste.
You can also top your whipped coffee with different ingredients. Here are a few ideas:
• Chocolate shavings
• Cocoa powder
• Hazelnut spread
• Caramel sauce
• Whipped cream
• Ground cinnamon
Ingredients
To be honest, I do not understand the chemistry behind whipped coffee. It baffles me that 3 simple ingredients can transform into a gorgeously fluffy foam. Nevertheless, I am glad someone invented this recipe and that I can share it with you.
Instant coffee: Coffee provides the flavor. As previously mentioned, instant coffee is perfect for whipped coffee as it can easily be whipped into foam, and it does not need to be brewed to make it palatable. You can use any brand of instant coffee you like.
Brown sugar: The sugar sweetens the coffee, which can be bitter. However, the sugar also dissolves and helps create the fluffy foam.
Water: If you were to whip coffee and sugar together, nothing would happen. Water dissolves the coffee granules and sugar crystals, allowing them to be whipped into a fluffy foam.
